A Catholic fraternal service organization with members around the globe, the Knights of Columbus has supported a range of charitable initiatives since its founding in 1882. Knights of Columbus members can achieve knighthood at four different levels or degrees. Each of these degrees represents one of the organization’s four core virtues.
Bestowed on all new members as they enter the Knights of Columbus, first-degree knighthood represents the virtue of charity. As they progress within the organization, members obtain second-degree knighthood (which introduces the virtue of unity) and third-degree knighthood (which introduces the virtue of fraternity). The terminal level of Knights of Columbus service, fourth-degree knighthood celebrates the virtue of patriotism. It is a tremendous honor that typically involves multiple ceremonies and gatherings.
